One In The Chamber - To The Gallows
If you’re a fan of grungy alt-rock a la Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Queens of The Stone Age doused in a melange of metal like Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch and Slipknot then the latest release by One In The Chamber is a MUST! It’s like all of these bands together but all their members are still living, they all seemingly get along and they have their shit together!
‘To The Gallows’ is a beautifully-crafted creep of a song that is full of vocal seduction, and instrumental sludge that leaves both a feeling of unease and an incredible feeling of satisfaction (at least in my case). There is something powerfully pleasing about the initial roar into the song and subsequent stripping away of that power to a diminished yet sultry vocal performance by Mike Biase leading to a raspy whisper before vocally punching everyone in the ears with another roar…and then another and another.
While there is a gloom and doom sort of fuzz over the rhythm guitar throughout the piece, it is cleared up by the typically tantalizing leads that border the dissonant, courtesy of Cecil Eugene along with the bumping bass licks of Christian Dotto. Throw in a heavy-as-fuck lounge beat by Gerrod Harris and that’s a perfect recipe for a real good time.
There’s no joke when Mike says he’s “broken free of the shackles”. This is OITC unleashed and in a way I hope to hear over and over (and I don’t just mean from the 50 times I’ve listened to this song already). This hard-hitting song of darkness and demons; remorse and tears is just everything you need to keep pushing forward. Whether it’s at work, in the gym, drowning out your parents or whatever the case may be, this is the only march ‘To The Gallows’ I’d recommend to anyone!
Make sure to support OITC’s latest release by checking out their live stream this Thursday with Mississauga Arts Council and Cats Cove Media! They kick everything off at 7:00 PM (EST) with performances from The MessAround and Matt Zaddy as well. Check it out right HERE!
