Emma Webb - 90s Playlist
Here is a rather sweet tune of beautiful friendship by Emma Webb. ‘90s Playlist’ is Webb’s debut single and I must say that it is a very interesting tune to lead with. I’m by no means saying this is a bad thing. It’s got a lot of stuff I enjoy on my playlist: some R&B, folky guitar, some bass kick and a lyrical scheme that has sparing rhyme and a lot of reason. If this is Webb’s niche that she is carving out, I can’t wait to hear what comes next. However, if this is just a friendly foray for her friends, I’d be concerned from a marketing perspective. But hey, what do I ultimately know as I sit on tons of yet-to-be-released music of my own while I do up this review!?
Regardless of all that, I love that ‘90s Playlist’ does hearken ever so slightly to some 90s feel while being completely out of the realm. There is a bit of Alanis in the vocals while still throwing in a bit of Natalie; some edge with a rounded point. When it comes to the lyrical structure, there is certainly something more akin to Paul Simon in there with a general disregard of rhyme scheme which I do definitely appreciate, giving the listener a bit of a shift from the norm which may cause a sense of ramble at first but I say it ultimately ends with elation.
The story seems a rather simple one and a very positive one on top of that: Friends meeting at university and doing everything together while listening to and belting along with their ‘90s Playlist’. Even as the years go by, these same friends meet and stand for each other at one of their weddings and they continue as they did when they first met, in spite of all the change around them. There is something so wonderfully simple and honest about this track that makes the entire construction feel right even when it may seem a little topsy-turvy. And, given the clear focus here, I think it would be very difficult for a listener not to be able to follow along and, to some degree, relate to the narrative.
For a first time out with her own work, I must say that I am very much looking forward to just what other fun and quirky music Emma Webb comes up with. There is a creativity here that appears in such a simplistic way in what has become a heavily saturated avenue of music but I think Webb will definitely perk up the ears of many a listener…she and her ‘90s Playlist’!
