Church on Sunday - Control Freak
Why would you bother going to church on Sunday when you could just stay home and listen to Church on Sunday from the comfort of your own no-pants zone? Especially when rocking’ out to the latest release by CoS, ‘Control Freak’. This is not a sombre song meant for a church service, that’s for damn sure.
The hard-hitting punk sound, reminiscent of some great 90’s skater music, is just what the doctor ordered during this seemingly eternal spell of pandemic, lockdowns and stay-at-home orders. “I’m not living your ideal; fuck you I will not appeal”, is exactly the sentiment so many are feeling these days, wondering when we can return to some sense of normalcy.
The recklessness and rage of so many are now erupting in certain pockets of the world, vying to be rid of those who would try and control our lives. Whether or not ‘Control Freak’ is specifically about this issue, it must be noted that this is the perfect time to release a tune like this. It could serve as anthem for those who are tired of staying indoors and who want to march about the place for freedom, as well as a raucous release for those who choose to stay safe and sound inside…while headbanging a metric fuck ton to this track; a sort of solitary rebellion in its own way.
“Run and hide just to cover your tracks” sounds like the eternal tale of every politician the world over and there is something so enjoyable about listening to punk today that still rages against some sort of machine and hasn’t fallen into complacency and the stylings of pop, devoid of substance.
Oh, and I have to say that if, during the solo, you started singing overtop of it ‘We Want Fun’ by Andrew W.K., you’ll maybe get a sense of just how simultaneously fun and rockin’ this track must have been for the band to make. That being said, why can’t we all have a good time listening and rockin’ out to it? Well, what are you waiting for? Go on! Don’t skip Church on Sunday, just enjoy blaring it from the comfort of your own home, away from the ‘Control Freak’ lording over his flock at the altar!
