Hoger - Same Mistakes

Hoger - Same Mistakes

If I was only allowed one specific critique of Hoger’s latest release, ‘Same Mistakes’, it would be that it is too short. Under the average three minute count by not quite twenty seconds, it truly does make a difference. Short and sweet, sure, but there is enough power in that song that I yearn for more of it. No reason why that should be ultimately considered a bad thing though. It simply means that I want more from Hoger and can look forward to what’s next.

Specifically, to this track, I have to say there is a wonderfully ethereal quality in the vocals regardless of how gritty and grounded they may push across the chorus. Add some low-end guit-box and pounding percussion and he can keep making the ‘Same Mistakes’ as often as he damn well pleases if it’s always going to sound this good. Especially once that burning guitar solo blazes through to the final acapella chorus. He could have kept that last run of choruses on a loop and I think audiences would thank him.

To the content of the lyric, I think it’s easy enough to surmise from the title alone that this is likely about someone who just gets tangled up with a lover and can’t seem to shake them; always going back for more punishment. I, and I’m sure so many others, fully understand that sentiment and that will do nothing but make this song relatable and replay-able, just like the mistakes Hoger sings of.

While I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of the disjointed and stilted synth in the track. If I hear it correctly, though, I do like the idea that it is simply the sound of a needle scratching a record again and again as if to symbolize the title of the song. However, I would love to hear this powerful piece with nothing but the backing vocals, string section and hard-edged instrumentation and vocals, devoid of synth. I think that would make for a solid listen.

That all aside, this is definitely a hard-hitting kick in the emotional teeth for those who suffer from addiction to toxic relationships and if you want to keep tabs on the musical man behind this creation make sure to check out Hoger right over HERE!
