Minhee Jones - 6 Feet

Minhee Jones - 6 Feet

Well, if you’re looking for a pop ballad that perfectly describes the way in which the general population of the developed world has been dealing with this pandemic, you need look no further than Minhee Jones’ latest single ‘6 Feet’. The title might seem just a little bit on-the-nose, regarding the standard six feet we are meant to stand from one another during these interesting times and maybe it is a little direct but that does not take away from the power of the piece at all. In fact, it pretty much enhances it, I think.

“I feel like we're all in a place where our brains don't want to deal with the full scope of this terrible thing that has taken over the world and we are also - more than ever - surrounded with means to medicate ourselves into avoiding it, be it actual medication, booze, chocolate, Netflix, or social media. So we're stuck at home and suddenly we're drinking more and eating more and binging more tv and online ALL THE TIME in an effort to not deal with just how destructive this virus has been to humanity.”

Jones has a clear grasp on just how many of us are spending our self-isolated days away and while places are now opening up more and more (disregarding the irresponsible actions of certain American governments at the federal and state levels) it becomes clear that we have spent a good portion of the time not taking to Trump’s prescription of ingesting cleaner but we have certainly not helped ourselves, as a people, to grow. We were already moulded to consume in much of the world and this pandemic has done nothing but drastically increase the amount that we do.

I have certainly found myself enjoying a few more drinks each week than I had previously and while I do make sure to keep myself relatively healthy, certain junk foods and an increase of TV time have found their way into my life. I know I’m not the only one who knows what Jones is singing about here. There may be some who are paragons of good health but I think there is a majority who have fallen deeper into the pit of consumerism as a means of therapy.

To the song itself, I have to share my appreciation for the composition of this piece. As a fellow musician who pretty much records each instrument and vocal track on their own, it is wonderful to know that Jones, as a solo musician, has so much skill at her fingertips in terms of the instruments she can play to create her wonderful world of music. In addition, she has a voice that rings with a soft clarity and a deeper, albeit nasal, attitude that is not afraid to push out the wonderful words written for this track.

There is something about staying “six feet apart to stay six feet above” that is truly terrifying and telling. I would absolutely recommend this dreamy synth-pop ballad to anyone who is looking for a way out of this cycle of human disconnect that we are so often a part of. Here’s to hoping that by the time Minhee Jones’ upcoming album releases this year, we will be able to raise our glasses in a bar and sweat it out on the dance floor…without fear of disease. Until that day comes, make sure to check out the tune right HERE, keep up to date on her website right HERE and remember…keep ‘6 Feet’ apart.
