Goldrain - Atlantis

Goldrain - Atlantis

If you’re looking for a funkin’ good time then you have to check out the latest release by London’s own Goldrain, entitled ‘Atlantis’. This groovy tune has got just what the doctor ordered to get people out of that quarantine funk…and straight into a funk with poppin’ bass licks, steady beats, jazzy keys, groovy guitar and a sultry alto voice with vaulted harmonies to back it all.

On the face of things, everyone knows what ‘Atlantis’ is. The great and fabled city lost to us somewhere in the depths. It’s no shock, then, that this track has a fantastical quality to it, pulled from the many fantasies of the lost city itself; perhaps one of the treasures recovered from its watery resting place. While one might easily make the case for a jazz/funk designation here, it would be naive to stop there. There is an elevated manner about this song, as though the band seeks to raise ‘Atlantis’ itself with their ethereal and enchanting number.

One can hardly disregard the intro which opens with a bass slide, followed by everything you would funkin’ need to groove through an otherwise drab day thanks to the bass line and muted picking. The steady yet quickened kit-playing keeps everything together while the beautiful jazz keys truly open up the song in preparation for a wonderfully tonal treat through the vocals of Barbs Dudek.

To the story of this groovy tune, all I can picture is someone searching for a perfection that just isn’t there; someone who felt they had paradise but lost it through the unfortunate reality that time just so happens to be linear and that things, much as we may despair, change. I love the imagery of looking in the mirror and seeing a sunken city. To use ‘Atlantis’ in this way is to suggest something so beautiful but then show it in its defeat, as though one or too many acts of hubris brought the ruin of a once-great monument to magnificence. What a wonderful way to take stock of one’s greatness and one’s faults.

If you want a smooth groove that simultaneously builds you up while it sinks you into an understanding of self-awareness, you need to add Goldrain’s ‘Atlantis’ to your playlist today! Keep up to date with the band right HERE! and make sure to download the full track right over HERE!
