Penny Betts - EP
If, by chance, you’re looking for a way to take a trip without ever leaving the farm this winter, you should definitely check out the latest release from Penny Betts. They just dropped a self-titled EP that is essentially a four-track collection that one might expect after an acid-fueled recording session with an indie-rocker, a shoe-gazer, someone who forgot disco died and an old hippie from back in the day.
If the above statement seems to come across as an insult, believe me when I say that it is entirely meant as a compliment. There is something simultaneously calming and energizing about this brief EP that really works…in almost the same way that the muddled and tripped out sounds of days gone by seem to work very well with the otherwise crisp and clean composition and execution of each and every track.
I have certainly no idea what an ‘Electric Ballroom Dress’ is but that does not mean this groovy tune won’t settle in just the right way on the ear to chill someone out. The ambient Floyd vocal effects mixed with the Bon Iver falsetto quality of Matt Felix’s voice is peaceful but the purposefully stilted-yet-exceptionally flowing guitar work of Al Finch, the ever-changing timing of drummer Jocelyn’s beats and the fuzzy and full lines of bassist, Lufta, really work well to create a sense that, however settled one might be, life continues on around them. This is true of the entire EP. I find this a very wonderful way to create music. The listener can have a solely personal connection to the tune but cannot escape the literal vibes of every person in the world around them.
So, again, if you’re looking for that trip through the winter months but you can’t get out of the house for all the snow and ice, let Penny Betts transport you elsewhere for a little while…I say “little while” because there are only four tracks on the EP but, if nothing else, this will leave listeners waiting eagerly for more!
