Pansy - Where There's Smoke

Pansy - Where There's Smoke

If you’re looking for a dose of dream punk to kick off the early summer weather then check out Pansy’s latest release, ‘Where There’s Smoke’. From their self-titled EP that drops this month, the track is full of punchy and raw guitar riffs with an ethereal vocal lead in stark contrast to make this an interesting mash of dream pop and garage punk. Somehow, it marries pretty damn well.

Imagine, if you will, that The Beat, The Headstones, Regina Spektor and Bjork all had a strange and cosmically musical orgy and ‘Where There’s Smoke’ may very well be what you end up with. The hard edge, the sweetness, and the slightly off-kilter composition all come together in a melange of tantalizing music to be enjoyed by the lovers of Shoegaze, Indie-Rock, Punk, Dream Pop and more.

My ears have been tuned to quirkier music as of late, so perhaps the influences I perceive in this track are a little out there but the only way you’ll know is if you check the track out for yourself!

I’d be very interested to know just what others hear in this interestingly upbeat, stilted-yet-soft, rough-yet-fluid release from Pansy.

If this is anything to go on for the rest of the EP, I am excited to review it when it drops! ‘Where There’s Smoke’ has just the right mix of vaulted harmonies and buzzing feedback that one is not sure how to fully take it, and that is exactly what I love about it. I could take this track so many different ways that it could be great for cruising, lounging out on the beach, laying on the floor next to the record player (if that’s a thing other people still do these days)…the versatility of what is such a seemingly simple song is fantastic.

I may not fully grasp what lyrics are being sung and I’m sure it would add even another dimension to what is already a complex composition, but I think it will play well for the audiophile who needs to know more and for the music junkie who just needs a new sound!
